Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology or SLIET is one of the most prestigious technical university in north India. The institute is located on 451 acres (1.83 km2) of land provided by the Punjab government in Longowal city in Sangrur district.

Contents

History

The institute was conceived by the government of India in 1985 as a tribute to Sant Harchand Singh Longowal, a Sikh leader in the 1970s. The institute was established by the Ministry Of Human Resource and Development in 1989 and was inaugurated on 20 December 1991. It was made a "Deemed to be University" by the UGC in April 2007.

Curriculum

The institute is an autonomous body, fully funded by the government of India and controlled by SLIET society, registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The institute awards its own certificates, diplomas and degrees approved and recognized by AICTE, New Delhi. Ph.D. programmes have begun.

Facilities

Central Library

The library holds about 42,000 books which includes technical books, along with books on literature, management and ethics. The library subscribes to national and international journals. Print subscription users have access to full text of articles from journals under the INDEST Consortium. The library has MMP, CTV, OHP and slide projector. A collection of VCDs as well as CD ROMs is available. An on-line live interactive classroom facility is available using the EDUSAT program of the government of India.

Hostels

SLIET has nine boys' hostels and three girls' hostels. The capacity of each is 235 students, and the capacity of the postgraduate hostel is 80 students.

All the hostels are connected to the internet with connections in each room in the senior hostels. Other facilities include indoor games, newspaper and magazine, reading room, visitor room, guest room (for parents), TV room, telephone, mess/canteen, gymnasium (for girls hostels), and library.

Labs and workshops

SLIET provides practical training to the students of all branches. It also provides practical training and experience to the students under 'non-formal' programmes. Manufacture and repairing of the institute's furniture is done in the workshops. It also conduct short orientation programmes for skill development of faculty and staff.

Health centre

The Health Center has an area of 400 sq meters, with four beds. It provides day-to-day medical facilities to the students, staff and faculty. The Health Center organizes seminar/camps with the help of the District Health Department.
